For the launch of the GOLD JAY Z fragrance, kbs+ asked us to join the team to help realize their vision of interactive fluid gold in 4k resolution. Utilizing face tracking and the Microsoft Kinect sensor, we gave pedestrians the ability to splash around in liquid gold. As the pedestrian interacted with the display their silhouette would absorb the gold and reveal branding below. You really have to see this on a 4k display to understand how beautiful it is!

The largest technological challenge we faced was in creating a zoomed-in view of a responsive, smooth, and reflective surface with enough detail to support a 4k resolution. This resolution of real time fluid simulation had never been accomplished before. When full screen fluid simulations are used for movies or TV it takes anywhere from minutes up to hours per frame to render. We needed to accomplish all of this graphic processing within 1/30th of a second… and we did!

Below, shows a close up look at the particle system based fluid simulation from early on in the project development. This was just the first step towards solving this enormous challenge.

Playing with the gold’s movement was mesmerizing. The following video gives you a sense of this along with the user experience and movement of the fluid gold.

Without seeing the experience in full 4k, the detail and subtlies within the gold can’t be perceived. The screen capture below hints at the look of the gold’s smooth and reflective surface.
